Following the initiative of the railway manufacturers Alstom, AnsaldoBreda, Siemens and Bombardier, European Union Agency for Railways (ERA) has established the International Railway Industry Standard (IRIS) as a specific standard for the assessment of the railway industry management system. The IRIS is now in its third Revision.
Based on and fully integrated with the ISO 9001 quality management standard, it defines the specific requirements of the railway industry’s business management system regarding design, development, manufacture, maintenance and, if applicable, installation and customer service of rolling stock – as well as signalling related products. In this respect, ISO/TS 22163 (IRIS) helps to assess suppliers more adequately in order to achieve a higher level of quality throughout the supply chain and to minimise the number of audits of certified suppliers.
At the same time, ERA establishes the rules for the IRIS Certification and provides us with the tools for the development of the Management System, such as the AUDIT-TOOL programme.
